National Assembly hears response on Wonderfonteinspruit

Mr G R Morgan (DA) to ask the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry:
(1)    Whether her department will take any measures in response to the recent report by the National Nuclear Regulator, entitled Status Report on the Actions Arising from the Study of Radiological Contamination of the Wonderfonteinspruit Catchment Area; if not, why not; if so, what measures;
(2)    whether there are any risks to humans and animals because of contamination in the Wonderfonteinspruit Catchment Area; if not, how did her department reach this conclusion; if so, what are the relevant details?

Suspension "procedurally unfair"

Dr Anthony Turton was suspended on 21 November 2008 by his employer, the CSIR ,on the grounds that his paper on the impending crisis in water supply in South Africa  contained statements that amounted to misconduct by him. In addition, Dr Turton was criticised for his communications on this matter to the media.

FSE counters CSIR's statements

Dr. Anthony Turton of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has been suspended.  The suspension follows directly after Dr Turton was prohibited from delivering the keynote address at the CSIR's conference, "A clean South Africa, Science Real and Relevant".

The CSIR has defended its decision to suspend Dr Turton.
